Tried using charcoal for the first one, I'm really disappointed, compared to something like:

or (being slightly more realistic) even:

(http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/114/3/6/Life_Drawing___Charcoal_06_by_Aeovis.jpg)

I really prefer the second one, I think the more varied shading looks better instead of all diagonally in one direction.
